Nancy Hanks, mother of President Abraham
Lincoln, worked in the Enloe house as a domestic servant when she was a
teenager, in western North Carolina, near Rutherfordton. Regional lore says that Abraham Enloe is Abraham Lincoln's real father. When Hanks became pregnant,
Enloe supposedly hired a local, Thomas Lincoln, to remove the girl from
the area. Enloe was an influential landowner and wanted to avoid the
scandal. Thomas took her to Kentucky and eventually Illinois, later
married her, and raised the child as his own, and had others. Many historians
dispute this, but Abraham Enloe's son Wesley
strongly resembles Abraham Lincoln. |
